BestHeating on Old House New Home

With the help of restoration man George Clarke and a couple of BestHeating beauties, Charles and Ian from Merseyside have transformed their period home into a stunning revived space.

If you were tuned in to Channel 4 on July, 18th you will have already spotted our Milano Windsors and been blown away by this beautiful home renovation. But if you missed it, have no fear. We have the complete before and after journey for you right here. So, sit back and take a look at how Charles and Ian turned their old house into their new home.

Before the renovation

Situated on the Mersey Estuary overlooking Liverpool, this Edwardian terraced house was blessed with original features. From the original cast-iron radiators, to the embelished fireplace and beautiful cornice archway, this terraced treasure is full of character. The décor however was on the dated side and failed to showcase these features in their best light.

Before the makeover, the kitchen managed to be simultaneously cluttered and bland. A mishmash of off-white cupboards, haphazard shelving and an uninspiring convector radiator had this space in need of some TLC.

Over in the dining room, the french doors created a nice view of the garden. But, the room wasn’t giving the tropical paradise outside the attention it deserved.

With months of work and a full team lead by architect George Clarke, the project included remodeling the ground floor layout to include a large through room forming the kitchen. Plus, an entertaining area overlooking the river at the front and at the rear the tropical style garden.

The new home

But look at it now! Celebrating the heritage of the property, the new space combines the perfect blend of old and new to make the most out of the original features whilst giving the interior a fresh new look.

Retaining as many Edwardian features as possible, Charles and Ian installed two Milano Windsor vertical column radiators in the kitchen and one in the dining room. The traditional column style radiators are more than just a functional feature but a decorative one too.

With their classic design, the Windsors complement the original cast-iron radiators that already existed in the rest of the house. Plus, the beautiful traditional oak Arts and Crafts furniture throughout the home.

From another angle we can see the entirety of the beautiful open plan kitchen and dining room. The new space is the perfect area for cooking, dining and entertaining with the open feel and fresh modern look giving it a more social appeal.

You can’t not be in awe of the stunning tropical garden framed by contemporary Crittal style bi-fold doors like a work of art. With the new tall glass panels, there is far more of a visual connection between the inside and outside

As if the outside wasn’t brought in enough, the green feature wall and botanical print cushions and wallpaper take the tranquil tropical feel one step further. We love how the space is flooded with natural light. This is truly alfresco dining all year round!

Charles and Ian decided to go for a raw metal finish on their column radiators, further adding to the authentic look and feel with another blend of old and new. For the valves, the Milano Windsor traditional thermostatic valves were the perfect choice to complement the bronze theme in the kitchen and the accent features throughout the home.

With a triple column vertical design, these striking Milano Windsor radiators provide ample heat for the large open space. The tall columns don’t only make a fantastic feature, they also save space by maximising the room around the radiator. Perfect for provding a powerful heat output and efficiently utilising your available space.

After much consideration, the couple decided to keep their fireplace but restore it to its original Edwardian look. With a new ornate hearth and reclaimed cast-iron art nouveau insert, the fireplace now looks like it has lived in the house all along! Not to mention the new hand crafted stained glass windows that look as authentic as they come.

Keeping with the Arts and Crafts colour palette, Charles and Ian painted the hearth and original cast-iron radiator to blend seamlessly into the wall and highlight the beauty of the details.

Ready for another transformation Tuesday? This before shot shows a cosy but tired looking space in need of a little face lift.

We can’t quite believe this is the same room! By removing the bookcase the room feels light and fresh, injecting new life into the space. Swapping the armchairs to one inviting chaise longue has also introduced a sense of modest luxury.

You can spot another raw metal Milano Windsor in the corner, this time a three column horizontal one. We love how the dark finish stands out against the light wall, drawing attention to the classic industrial columns. This is definitely a place we’d all like to sit and enjoy a cuppa!

Turn around and not only do you find a beautiful bay window, you are also treated to a fabulous view of the Liverpool skyline. What a perfect spot to sit, catch up and unwind by the warmth of the original white cast-iron radiators.
